Challenge #1
The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.
Hi. I'm Zimena. I used to be more active with the online journaling back in the day, and I'm always telling myself that I'd like to get back into writing here regularly. It would be very nice if this challenge could give me the needed kick to get the year started on a good note.
I'm a sports fan in general, and by extension that tends to lead to taking an interest in certain countries and languages if I have favourite athletes from there. Even though I don't play any sports myself, I follow my favourites passionately and tend to get deeply absorbed with whatever sport is the most important to me. For the last few years, that has meant - and still means - snooker.
As for fictional fandoms, they're mostly of the gaming variety. From "modern" games, I used to be heavily into Genshin Impact, and maybe Baldur's Gate 3. However, I'm also old enough to have a big space in my heart for the old NES and SNES games. You just can't beat some of them for playability. (I've just discovered Uncharted Waters: New Horizons, and I'm hooked!)
Sometimes I might think of fic about people I admire, but these days it rarely comes out of my fingers. That's also something I'd like to start fixing in the year ahead. We'll see, though.
For now, that's a bit about me. Looking forward to meeting some new people via this challenge. I'm always happy to make new friends!

But the snooker table is bigger, and the pockets smaller. Plus, the rules are different, and snooker can be a much more tactical game - one frame (I believe that'd be called "one rack" in pool?) can last 10 minutes if it goes quickly, or an hour if it's a slower and more tactical game. I haven't watched pool much, but I feel like it's generally a faster-paced sport?
Soccer used to be one of my big interests, too. However, I more or less gave up on it since 2015, and follow it only casually now. But most sports are fun on some level to me, and I can enjoy watching various different ones.

Date: Sat, Jan. 10th, 2026 09:41 (UTC)Wow, great question. I had to think about it for a while, but I guess for me sports were always a world I could get absorbed with and dream away in, in the same way that other people get lost in their favourite TV series. Sports aren't just about "people competing at things on TV" - it's also about getting emotionally invested in everything around it - the rivalries, the people you like and the ones you don't like as much (perhaps because they beat your favourites!), enjoying a good performance, but also absolutely having your heart broken because that one person you admire failed at something important. Plus, there's the international aspect of it, too. Ever since I was little, having a favourite athlete from some country meant wanting to know about that place, or maybe even research something about their language (even if I might not go as far as wanting to learn it).
I hope that answered your question, at least a little?
Good luck with the challenge, and keep enjoying it! Happy 2026 to you!
