Ugh, it took me a couple of hours to fall asleep last night. Once I got to sleep I slept well though. The alarm dragged me awake - I heard and felt it vibrating several times before I woke up enough to turn it off. This has never happened with this particular alarm before; usually I wake up at the first vibration (as far as I can tell). My cold is following the usual course of a cold and I'm snuffly and sneezy today but not feeling too bad. I took a Sudafed PE nighttime pill last night and it seemed to dry things up for an hour or two, but after that I think it wore off. I had been thinking of taking a second one after four hours if I happened to wake up around the right time, but when I did wake up during the night I didn't feel like wrestling with one of the horrible child-safe blister packs the pills are in.

I also took a couple of the daytime Sudafed tablets during the day today and I think they helped slightly with the congestion. However, I'm afraid they might have affected my cognitive abilities even though they are supposed to be safe for daytime use. I took my car for a drive after lunch (maybe an hour or two after taking one of the pills) because it was more than a week since I'd last used it, and at one point I found myself quite unconsciously driving on the left instead of the right. Luckily I was on very quiet low-speed neigbourhood roads, but I was unpleasantly surprised when a car came around a corner on the same side of the road as me and I instantly realised I was the one in the wrong. This has happened once or twice before, plus once when I was in Australia I found myself unconsciously driving on the right. On busy roads there are plenty of cues as to which side of the road I should be on, but on deserted or nearly deserted roads it's all too easy to default to the wrong side.

The girls were all excited this morning because Eden was opening her birthday gifts before school. This afternoon her mother has taken her out of school for the final couple of hours, and tomorrow after school she is having a party. Very exciting times.

Thanks for the nice comments on the previous entry. They, along with just writing it out in the first place and D holding me tight (normally I am the big spoon but he did a great job at it last night!) helped me have an okay night.

D had asked me, after we turned the lights off, if there was anything I wanted to do today -- the family had no real plans beyond making the homemade vegan wellington for my birthday dinner that D's sister had suggested and I'd gotten excited about before I remembered quite how much work it was last year, oops. But D and I helped and it felt a lot less of a production this year.

Anyway, before that we had no plans and I thought it might be nice to get out of the house and see something of Birmingham. We didn't actually make it as far as the city centre but the local high street allowed D to browse charity shops while I got a long-overdue haircut (I went from the longest hair I've had in quite a while to the highest skin fade I've maybe ever had, so it feels like a dramatic difference!), and we went for a very nice birthday lunch.

My birthday present from D might still be trapped in DRM hell but he told me what it is, and The Feminist Art of Walking by his old pal Morag goes very nicely with the birthday present I've already gotten from [personal profile] angelofthenorth, of short walks/hikes around Greater Manchester. I also got a bookshop.org voucher from D's mum, which can be added to the one that comprised the other part of my birthday present from Miriam, so I have to decide what to get there too, which is so fun.

Weirdly, my birthday also marks a year since Gary died. It feels so long ago but also I can still conjure him so clearly in my memory, and there probably hasn't been a day all year that I haven't thought of him. I still miss him so much.

I've had a much better day, and I'm looking forward to being home tomorrow.

Monday Storytime- The Professionals

So today we have the final chapter AND a missing scene from Chapter 4! As a Christmas treat.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all! 🎅🎁🎄

Too Many Of You Fellas Are Bent

Chapter 7 – The Unprofessionals

A revelation of truth.

***

It was no good keeping secrets from Doyle, though, he always knew when Bodie was hiding something from him. The next day in the car, he barked, “come on. Out with it.” He was driving and looking at the road, so Bodie couldn’t really see his expression.

“Okay then
erm—well—turns out the operators have got money riding on when Lucas, McCabe and us two are going to be found out.” Bodie watched him carefully for signs of an impending explosion of rage.

When they stopped at a traffic light, Doyle stared at him for a long moment, then burst out laughing.

Bodie stared at him in surprise. “Glad you’re taking it so calmly.”

“Well, you know
for some reason
I feel more relaxed these days.” He patted Bodie’s thigh.

“Aww
But
shall we tell Lucas and McCabe about the betting?”

“Erm
yeah. Wouldn’t be any fun playing against them if they don’t even know the game.”

“Who are you and what have you done with Ray?”

They both laughed this time.

So after telling their friends the situation, for the next week both couples competed with each other as to who could be the least affectionate and most business-like with their partner. They were growling and snapping or ignoring each other at every possible opportunity, and then of course making up when they thought they were alone.

***

Then one day Cowley called all four of them into his office. “Gentlemen,” he said, as they sat there looking like schoolboys who had been hauled in to see the headmaster. “Your behaviour with your work colleagues is going beyond the limits of professionalism.”

The agents exchanged glances, wondering if he meant they'd been too surly with each other? Or the opposite and they’d been caught canoodling too much?

Misc +++

+ I did a shitload of chores this weekend and I STILL haven't wrapped the Christmas presents. Guess I'll have to figure out some moment to do that in between, well, everything else.

+ Mom brought me a ~chocolate wine~ the other day. Supposedly it's a digestif made up of chocolate and red wine, but it doesn't taste like wine at all. It tastes kind of like chocolate milk mixed with rum or something like that. Very interesting drink; probably not something I'd pick up myself mind you, as it's a little gimmicky (and was probably expensive), but interesting.

+ [Event] [community profile] beagoldfish is a fandom event taking place from Jan 01 to Feb 28. It's centred around short works - there's a 1k maximum. It sounds fun! I think I might try to whip up a short work for it, or finish off a draft (if I can find something suitable). It's been a while. I like that it's a fest rather than an exchange - I don't have enough fandoms these days to do multifandom exchanges like Candy Hearts, but a fest is definitely something I can participate in.

+ I didn't set a wordcount goal for myself for 2025. On the one hand, I found it much easier to work around my schedule than previous years, which is good. On the other hand, I didn't get much writing done (though I did do some!). I'm wondering what I should do this year... Like, should I set a (low, manageable) wordcount goal, or should I set a goal to finish a handful of specific fics? Hard to say! I'm going to have to take a look at my WIPs before I make any decisions.

+ I really miss Hetalia roleplaying. ;~; I was thinking back on some of the threads I've done over the years, and feeling very nostalgic. Playing Nor was a total blast - but it's also very important that I had some really awesome partners. ;~; Folie, Wald, Chi, Jay... They were all so good at their characters. (And all seem to have dropped out of my orbit and/or fandom in general in some cases, unfortunately). Sometimes I feel like seeking out new people to play with, but the thought of trying is so daunting, I wouldn't even know where to start. Plus, I doubt I'd be able to commit.

+ And also I think in general I miss having random places to braindump Hetalia thoughts. Finding a good fit for me is hard. Probably too nostalgic for the LJ/DW era.

Violet's party yesterday afternoon was surprisingly quiet. Her plans were: do crafts, bake cookies, drink hot chocolate, and watch a movie. What actually happened for two hours was: do crafts and drink hot chocolate. Somebody baked cookies, but it might have been my daughter. The crafts were: paint a small hot chocolate mug Christmas ornament, and diamond paint a small decorative Christmas plaque. It seems that all the girls got really into the diamond painting and were happy to keep doing it for the whole time. Unfortunately today Violet is suffering from a big letdown.

I didn't sleep well again last night. I went to sleep quickly and slept well between about 9:30 pm and 1 am, but then I woke up and couldn't get back to sleep again. I did eventually fall asleep sometime after 4 am, but I woke up again just before 5 am and that was it for the night. This morning I went for a walk (because it was a beautiful sunny morning and the temperature was several degrees above freezing), and while I was out I stopped at the supermarket to buy some form of cold remedy which I hope will help me sleep better tonight. I don't actually feel too bad but during the night my throat felt weirdly congested, which wasn't comfortable.

It's Eden's 9th birthday tomorrow. She really really wanted a leopard gecko for her birthday, so this afternoon her father took her out to choose one, which she was very excited to bring home and set up next to her bed. I'd never seen one before (although I've seen many plain brown geckos on the walls of our house in Indonesia), and I was surprised at how prettily coloured it is. It really does have leopard-like colouring and markings.

More Garden Changes

So a couple of months ago the huge tree overhanging our garden was cut down AT LAST. Now via Freegle I've given away a shrub that was in a pot, but grew through it and is now 7 feet tall!

Removing it has made our garden so much lighter and larger. Well it was that size anyway, but now we can see the whole garden clearly. There is one other plant to give away, much smaller but we'll see if that is claimed.

As ever, my mum decided that we should do what she wanted, so she bought and planted this shrub for us. That was 20 years ago, then I had a baby and was far too busy to worry about the garden, and the plant just grew and grew!

So now it's gone to a good home. A nice young guy came and cut it out of the ground and took it away to his garden where he has some more plants of the same species to make a screen or something.

It was slightly sad to see the shrub go but it was necessary. Now if/when we move house, prospective buyers will see the full size of the garden!

The Blue Flower, Penelope Fitzgerald

Sometimes, what one really wants is a short book, which is why last month I reread Penelope Fitzgerald's The Blue Flower for the first time in a very long time. I think I appreciated it more. Reading it is like walking along a wood-panelled corridor in a rather shabby house, passing door after door and peeping through the keyhole at each upon a brilliantly-lit scene that shows for a moment a glimpse of a place and of the inhabitants' lives.

Fritz/Friedrich von Hardenberg/the philosopher and poet Novalis, at the age of 22 meets and falls in love with Sophie von KĂŒhn, who is twelve. Fitzgerald knows better than to waste time on telling her readers that she is well aware this is inappropriate, to put it mildly. The reader knows that this is ludicrous. Sophie is twelve on her first appearance, not well educated, not particularly inteligent. She loves her family, and she likes beer, smoking her pipe, and watching the Hussars fall over on the frozen river. Fancying oneself in love with her is the end result of a concept of woman as the child of nature, and the way in which incredibly well-educated men look at the intelligent, interesting, sensible, grown up women around them, and enjoy their company, value them, depend upon them, and yet fail to see them as actual human beings. Sophie herself may be tragic, the romance is not.

For Sophie is not only a random 12 year old inspiring a poet philosopher, but dying of tuberculosis, which pervades the novel as much as the country's damp pervades its buildings. Undeniable in the case of Sophie as a black patch on the wall, but lurking also hidden in the plaster, in everybody's lungs*. Sophie is a fool, but she is a child, it's excusable, and as a child she faces her illness with both the lack of understanding and courage required for three surgeries without anaesthesia. Fritz and his brother Erasmus are fools, and it is not excusable. They are equipped with everything they could need to be both Romantic and rational men, yet they are not. "Take some fucking responsibility!" I want to cry to almost every man in the book. The women have to (up to the age it can be handed on to a daughter not yet worn out with child-bearing), you could, too. Recognise, philosopher, that you could have a conversation about Goethe's works with a woman who has read them. But Goethe, too, only comes to see Sophie.

Fitzgerald's first novel was published in her late 50s, she was nearly 80 when this was published. There's hope for us all!

*Since the novel was written, it has been suggested that Friedrich and his siblings may not have succumbed to TB, but to cystic fibrosis.

For no apparent reason, I couldn't get to sleep last night. After almost an hour of lying in bed not sleeping I got up and read for an hour or so, but then when I tried to sleep again I lay awake for another long period of time. And then to add insult to injury I woke up about ten minutes before my alarm and couldn't get back to sleep because I needed the bathroom. Ugh. And also my throat was starting to feel sore during the night and when I woke up this morning it was worse. I don't really feel congested (yet) but my throat is still sore and being extra tired isn't helping.

Eden was not well this morning but seems to have recovered now, after a good soak in the bath. My daughter is a big believer in a restorative or calming bath, and her daughters seem to have followed suit. (I generally prefer a shower.)

Violet is having a Christmas party late this afternoon, which she has been planning for months. This morning she was supposed to tidy her room in preparation but her work was very sketchy (in the sense of not thorough). She wasn't very motivated to do a better job because she says they won't be using her room for the party (I hope she's not planning to use the basement
) so I helped her move furniture around so she could vacuum behind and under things.

Apart from that small amount of activity I'm not planning to do much today, hoping that taking it easy will make my sore throat go away.

My coat didn't arrive yesterday and when I checked the LLBean website it now shows "arriving on 22nd December". I suspect there is a lot more stuff than usual being shipped at this time of year which might explain the delay. I was intrigued when I looked at the tracking history to see that the package went from upper New York state down into northern Connecticut and then back north east into Massachusetts. Weird, and doesn't seem very efficient to me.

Pablo

Despite having technically finished work yesterday, I did log on for one meeting today because it looked so incredibly useful, and it was. And it was done at noon so I still had time to help pack and get stuff ready and we got going on time.

We had a pretty smooth journey to Birmingham and a delightful time visiting [personal profile] barakta and Kim and seeing their new house before we got here.

Now we're at D's sister's. Her husband and son arranged to get her a sourdough starter from a from a friend of the kid's.

Of course the first thing they have to do with it is name it.

I joked that it should be called Joe Ryan of course. Or Pablo LĂłpez. (They are starters for my baseball team, you see.)

So now it's called Pablo.

The kid once called it Pablo Escobar and now its full name is Pablo Escojar.

It's miserably grey and rainy today, but the temperature is about 13C/55F. I got my exercise going up and down the two flights of stairs for about 15 or 20 minutes, which was quite taxing. I feel that that's enough exercise when combined with the other times during the day when I use the stairs not for exercise.

I've always had trouble finding warm clothes with long enough sleeves, and mostly end up buying men's long sleeved shirts or jackets for the sleeve length. Especially for jackets, I like the sleeves to be long enough for me to pull them down over my hands for extra warmth. A few years ago I bought a beautiful deep pink women's jacket from LL Bean, even though the sleeves just barely reached my wrists, and I've kind of regretted it ever since. It was really warm and had a gorgeous fluffy lined hood, but the sleeves became a deal breaker so when I moved here I gave it to Violet. It's slightly big on her but she wears it all the time. Meanwhile I've been wearing a parka that was S's which has slightly longer sleeves but still not long enough. It's a nice deep purple colour and I like it a long - except for the sleeves. Plus it's more than twenty years old and is very heavy.

The other day when it was still below freezing I was going outside to empty the food scraps bowl into the compost and I picked up a random coat from the basement/mud room floor to wear. It turned out to belong to my son in law and was very lightweight with sleeves which came down over my hands, and I liked it a lot even though it was black, which is not my preferred colour. When I checked the label I found it was an LL Bean men's parka, size XL. (I'm not huge but I felt like it was a good fit for wearing layers under.) On a whim, I decided to treat myself to a new coat, and ordered the exact same coat from the LL Bean website. (I'm going to have to mark it so that it doesn't get mixed up with son in law's coat.) When I went to pay using PayPal, it turned out that I could use some of my credit card rewards dollars towards the cost of the coat, and all I ended up paying was the tax of just over $12. I've never paid attention to those credit card rewards dollars before, but this year they've also paid for some of my Christmas shopping.

The coat is supposed to arrive today; what a shame it's not cold enough for me to need it today.
